I meant: « in the direction of » ..
Maybe ‘towards’ would have beeore appropriate (?)

Emergency lane referred to unobstructed, ‘free from hindrance’, and hints at the intensity of life experienced away from the background noise we have come to consider normal.
Emergency lane= a side step with a taste of liberty.
….if I remember correctly.

Hmm… to me it meant a means of escape from danger. A sort of sandpit to drive into if the brakes fail…
