Carrying One’s Child

Rushing to pick up your fifteen-year-old son at the bus stop as a rainstorm suddenly broke,

Set in motion by the same momentum that rushed us towards him, fourteen years ago, when he fell to the ground or banged into furniture while trying to walk…

It’s not because they grow up that they no longer need us

It is the form of carrying that changes.
The carrying never stops.

Carrying your child in your mind, a nascent life project
Carry your child for nine months in your nourishing body
Carrying your child in your arms for two years, before he learns how to walk
Carrying in your consciousness, guiding your child in his life choices during his youth.

Then carry your child some more, more even than ever before,

Carrying your child in the silence of your heart and in your prayers when he is an adult.

A mother, a father, never stops carrying their child.

We never stop being parents
