Subtlety is expressed by a sense of ellipsis at the verbal level, as well as at the level of behavioral grammar.
On a more global level, all teaching is a story of the rise of the elliptical form.
At the beginning of the learning process, it is always about stating each step, explaining each of the mechanisms, then, as they are progressively integrated, as the cognitive processes become more fluid.
In wisdom teachings, we often find a form of ellipse – it gives this wisdom the subtlety that characterizes it. There is a very strong link between wisdom and subtlety, heaviness and ignorance.
Subtlety, since it reduces the presence and impact of surface elements, allows the riches of the depths of the soul to emerge.
When words and gestures abound, such layers then flow back into the abyss.
Wisdom is the teaching that comes from the wealth of the abyss.
Subtlety allows this phenomenon to emerge.
Isn’t silence the ultimate art of ellipsis ?

So, we are back to teaching without words?
It works only when the student knows how to listen to silence. That strikes me as increasingly rare. Just as the irony of expressing this in words is just « increasing. »
