Reading the Bible or the Kor’an in French is it itself a profound teaching,
Indeed, French will never be able to transcribe the subtleties of the Hebrew or Arabic of the original texts.
This constitutes a degree of understanding of the incompressible gap between what the text says and what I can understand, and allows us to consider the gap between what the words reported and the heart of the practice.
Although honest, authentic, the words reported are in reality echoes of someone else’s practice, the real essence of which will remain inaccessible to us,
just as the non-Arabic-speaking reader will often remain at the door of the text.
Even if he can nevertheless penetrate it by grace, the acceptance of the elusive nature as it is allows us to distance ourselves from the different supports and truly enter practice.
It does without words.

The issue exists in all language barriers. All translation is an interpretation.
Add to that, the original words are mere interpretation of thought, those thoughts defined within long lost cultural frameworks…
It’s doubtful we have any idea of the finer points of what was meant, originally…

That is also much appeasing and space-opening.
It also sets us in motion to actualise teachings.
(does not mean ‘modernise’ nor ‘contextualise’ but : incarnate, create anew every time.

How does that differ from « you get out of it what you put in, » as I have heard preachers say? How does that differ from « make it up as you go along »…?

It only differs in the ears of the one receiving such answers.
Pretty much like anarchy – to be put in good hands only.
it’s like the « come as you are » campaign by McDonald’s, in a way.
The « as you are » part can give way to regrets when certain customers enter the place.
not eating junk food is a sure way to avoid such awkward moments.
I don’t know where this parallel is leading me here, but I’m sure you can complete it in your own mind.
I’m thinking ‘breadcrumbs and dogs’ parable or the Buddha not answering the Self questions, or Sages adapting answers depending on whom is asking.
