Waking Up At night

I see that waking up is actually a process occurring in stages. I open my inner eyes and leave my eyelids closed
And upstream of these inner eyes, other palaces,
Eyes of depth open while the inner eyes remain closed,

How many eyes remain upstream?
And when all eyes are closed,
and sleep takes place behind thick eyelids,
One eye remains open.
