The attraction for Zen seems to strike more intensely the pilgrims with a prominent ego and developed cognitive faculties…this attraction, more or less consciously, provides a satisfactory alibi.
They will then justify their practice of Zen all the more since they will be confronted with traditions requiring that the ego and reason smash against the rocks before entering the Cave.

Why would anyone need to justify the practice?
