Optimized Tools And Narrowed Mind

Mechanical thinking, that of processes, hierarchies, and steps, is the mode of thinking that generates the greatest exhaustion.

Yet it is the one we use when interacting with technological tools (phones, PCs, etc.).
By its very nature, it tends toward optimization.

And this optimization is endless. Hence the micro-questioning, followed by nano-questioning, which is increasingly sterile and less and less conducive to generating healing impulses in our minds.

Thus, as we optimize our use of the tool, we narrow the scope of the mind.
We close the mind to the mind.
It must be possible to embrace these processes more broadly, more or less instinctively, without seeking continuous optimization, and to deal with something else…

  1. Professional life requires accuracy, detail. This, I know by experience.

    The ability to concentrate for long periods is useful.

    But it is dehumanising. I have been that lawyer who (quite literally) told a colleague, concerned about the consequences of a case: « feelings are irrelevant; these are the facts. »

    It is a great relief just to be, and to be aware.
