He who prays while repeating texts, speaks quickly, and strings together prayers as one rushes to recite a lesson or complete a few tasks before being freed and able to return to an occupation,
or who strings together words like a backdrop, while his mind is busy with other wanderings,
He has not yet understood that the words he so churns out are the guidelines to an inner experience sequenced into energetic movements, that they come to suggest themselves to his consciousness, like successive wagons or canoes that present themselves to him at different points on the river.
It is by placing his consciousness there that these inner movements accomplish their work and embark the disciple on this inner pilgrimage that takes place with each prayer.
Without dedicated attention, he doesn’t use any of his mounts and remains like a library-room adventurer, always talking about his upcoming adventures but remaining on the bank, scrolling through piles of maps and stories one after the other.

And what of one who prays without words?
