The Buddha did not answer the question of the Self,
as long as the mental world hasn’t passed,
as long as the silent detonation occurs,
any mention of self, god, source, heart, being, is useless.
Not mentioning God is therefore an act of compassion, because if he heard an affirmative answer to the question of the Self, the disciple could only hear it from the sphere of the mind and would then begin to appropriate and distort it, as the mind does.
This would distance him (and, if this disciple had the profile and aura of a speaker, others would be affected by this deviation) a little further from the encounter with the divine.
The Buddha knows this and thus, he keeps silent.
He makes himself the guardian of silence.

By this analysis, how does knowing (which is a mental process) not create the same distance, regardless of whether spoken?

If I understand your question properly, which I m not sure, I’d say that this is part of the bodhisattva hat, the Buddha has decided to wear once he agreed to teach his wisdom.

Now, I must puzzle over whether I correctly understand your possibly correct understanding…
Or, maybe, I’ll have a coffee instead.

You’d better get a coffee…
And I’ll have one myself,
Because I’m not sure what I meant when writing all this.

Coffee with extra oomph, then…
