In his instructions on posture (fukanzazenji), Dogen recommends taking a few deep breaths before beginning.
When the posture is correct, a deep breath arises of its own accord; the posture creates a draft.

The Great Clean-up of the Corridors
The posture is an in-draft.

Hmm…
I use a breathing exercise on occasion, to clear my mind. It involves concentrating on the natural rhythm of breathing.
A periodic deep breath is part of that rhythm.

‘Breathe normally, don’t try to breathe a certain way’
…Sounds like the instructions given for zazen.
That is very disappointed and often confusing for people who expect refine advice on breathing patterns.
Very amusing, as well…

That is certainly the only text by Dogen one cannot not understand.
So it is possible to claim one has read Dogen and understood something.
Not too loud, though, cause you never know.
These are the basic instructions to sit zazen…
…
There are occasional deep breaths involved if I remember correctly.
