Invoking the angel, a devotion to a particular saint,
Ultimately, these are inner practices, just as when a zazen practitioner comes to bow before a statue of Buddha and then before the safu before sitting on it. They are not revering a statue or a cushion. Those who come to practice zazen salute the profound wisdom of the part of their consciousness that is already awakened, already liberated.
To the distracted eye, this may seem freer, clearer, more direct, but in reality,
they are not two fundamentally different practices.
