The path of non-attachment is exhausting,
On every bend, we believe we have reached the home stretch
Only to discover we are headed to another turn.
On this thread, so many knots to untie.
The path of non-attachment is dreadfully demanding.
On every curve in the road, the heart sinks deeper
And relieves a spadeful of dust.
On every untied knot, dewdrops of tenderness
Seep in a little further down.
Non-attachment teaches The Great Freedom
Opening onto landscapes we’d never dared to dream about.
The path of non-attachment is understanding.
There is no other path but the path of non-attachment.
Non-attachment, joy of being : no difference.
The Buddha makes it the touchstone of his teaching
Only because it is the key opening all locked up doors.
It is the secret writing on the timeless
Parchment unrolled before your eyes
Half-closed.
