We will not abandon (or adhere to) a thought in a binary way, like we go from 0 to 1.
The phenomenon of adhesion or distancing takes place in small steps.
The process of familiarization with or, dishabituation from, a mental climate (set of thoughts)
Occurs incrementally.
It begins like a gust of wind that throws us outside the circle of habitual thought.
For a few seconds, at most, we remain taken aback by this new configuration, and then we hop back or are swallowed back into the circle of the previous winds.
The experience remains within us and waits for the next burst to accumulate a few more seconds until it becomes a significant thought experience.
This is how, without really changing,
people change.

Change can be more cataclysmic – though I suspect even then, it is rarely without a more gradual groundwork having been laid.

that is the ages-old debate between sudden and progressive ‘enlightenment’.
I see things as you do, in this comment.
Sudden means progressive in the background.
Therefore, no debate.
