It is really difficult to accept that spirituality is not one more learning, or yet another set of elements to acquire by effort and study, nor a heap of knowledge to make ours.
The mind never ceases to seek to insert this type of material between the pilgrim and the spiritual life. It becomes less and less obvious to the latter that what time and/or effort has accumulated before his eyes, must be dissolved, deployed, destroyed in order to live in truth, to come out of his lethargy.
This will be all the more difficult for him as the intermediate material will have cost him in efforts and sacrifices (sum of theological knowledge, books, financial investments, etc.)
Also, the more the material will tend to confer on him a privileged or well-defined social status (reassuring), the more it will be necessary for him to be pulverized by an inner grace so that the dissolution takes place.

To my mind, this, again, indicates the dichotomy between spirituality and formalised ritual. The latter, at most, is a temporary tool that, one used, is proven useless.
