The Middle Way is also having to stand halfway between obsessive rigor and unbridled hedonistic permissiveness.
The Middle Way is wisdom
It is taken by the one who knows how to see, the one to whom it has been given to see,
The confinement, the dependence, the spiritual atrophy.
In the disciple who is obsessed by rigor is the inner misdirection,
the progressive freezing of the soul of the practitioner is observed on the side of rigor.
Masters know how to use the excesses of both of these polarities,
in the same way that one ostensibly corrects a course to port, before putting the “helm” back to starboard once the ship is on course.
The master’s excess is then a teaching.

Deciding what is excess is not simple. In the end, we live as we ride a bicycle – constant adjustment of balance.
