There was a man sent from God whose name was John.
He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.
He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.
He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.
He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.
Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God »
John speaks on several frequencies at once. Here, he gives an inner teaching that focuses on the layers of consciousness. By making himself present (witnesses of the heart/principle/light), John receives (awakens) and can become a child of God (to his deepest nature).
Jesus, the Christ, is that which in us is awakened to our deepest nature (that which receives the light of the Word).
To pray to Christ is to move toward this nature, to receive it.
All the practices of connection, prayer, and meditation are wrapped up in these few lines.
Have we even taken the time to truly listen ?

Your interpretation would so often be drowned by the strident voices of literalists.
