This reminds me of something I think I read in a book by Colin Wilson (long time ago) about the need to get away from autopilot and be, actually, conscious. I suppose Paulo Coelho makes a similar point when he speaks of breaking routine.
We are buried in an illusion and pretend, unthinkingly, that it is real.

I believe suffering is both what glues us to the illusion and what has the potential to drive us out of it.
