People who suffer from the crust of existence on their path have in common the inability to realize that these ingredients of suffering are precisely part of the crust of existence.
They do not cover this superficial aspect (not in the sense of « light, little impact, » but of surface consciousness) and see in this crust the totality of existence.
Getting through appears to be an ability indexed on heterogeneous criteria.
Getting through is a practice to which some have opened themselves through rigorous discipline.
For others, the pierced screen occurs for no apparent reason, and the ability to pass through will only be stabilized by subsequent practice.
Still others will not need to establish any practice, and a single expression will be enough to stabilize them in the profound vision.
The depth of anchoring is decisive in stabilizing this path.
When the breakthrough strikes deep and opens the way to definitive anchoring, other forces may prioritize surface maintenance (parameters linked to character, the will for freedom, the powers of habit).
Conversely, some will achieve definitive anchoring through small successive bursts, each of which is incapable of creating the shift, but which, combined, will allow the disciple to establish a profound vision.

I agree that there is no « one size fits all » to realising life and consciousness is more than appears to be the concrete, physical world.
But I cannot, now, get the image of a rather large pie with thick pastry crust and gently steaming filling out of my head. Perhaps it’s time for lunch.
