The contradiction inherent in each of the four vows of the Bodhisattva * is in itself an invitation to go beyond.
It is the teaching of the four vows.
As long as one remains within a mindset of accounting and calculation, these four vows are meaningless.
As soon as one transcends this sphere of thought, realization makes sense.
In transcending this cognitive limit, the four vows become operative.
Before this breakthrough, they are a contradiction expressed in four lines.
*Sentient beings are numberless; I vow to save them.
Desires are inexhaustible; I vow to put an end to them.
The Dharmas are boundless; I vow to master them.
The Buddha Way is unattainable; I vow to attain it.
