There is a secret gift at the very heart of the aging process. It does not consist of a gain or a loss:
As I get older, I don’t win or lose anything – I just slowly leave the competition zone.
Gently enough, so as not to persist in the struggle as my odds of winning it dwindle.
Nor does it happen in a movement of rage or despair to realize that I have moved away from it once the passage beyond the point of return has occurred.
The absence of a possible return is a path to serenity.
