The bodhisattva manifested in this body bends to the laws of physics.
This is why this body is manifested.
If it complies with the uses of society, it is because he has decided so or because his deep bodhisattva nature has not yet fully emerged in his consciousness, and he believes himself to be a prisoner of the customs of the world.
Either he chooses to comply with it in consciousness, or he is not aware that he chooses to comply with it.
By the emergence of his deep consciousness, then, by realizing that he bends to the uses of the world, he will be able to free himself from it.

Does the « bodhisattva » in this mean anything substantially different to the « psyche »?

Maybe there is some form of overlap if we consider the deepest archetypal meaning of ‘psyche’. But you’d me much qualified to say so than I would.
