Shinjin datsuraku* is the exit door we must take every time we begin to build a religion.
If we don’t leave the body-mind instantly, then a religion is created.
We begin to interact with a body of concepts; if we don’t escape from it by following Dogen’s injunction,
otherwise, this body will engulf us.
Flames from the hearth swirl in all directions, and with their crackling flashes, they hold us captive.
In the hell of the mind, flames of perceptions constantly whirl.
They lick and consume us.
Yet Dogen calls,
Shinjin datsuraku
Leave the body-mind.
*Gererally translated as « leave the body-mind »

Perhaps, if we really took Dogen’s advice, we would not build a religion in the first place.
Mind, my immediate reaction when I saw just the title « Dogen or Hell » was « You’ve obviously tried making sense of his writings and think this is very real choice…! »
