‘A Person’

How can we understand a personal God, a God in whom Christians are supposed to believe, to adhere to a personal God, not as a person on a cloud or physically distinct, but a personal God as that which emanates from a personal relationship?

…That is, intimate, gentle, friendly, the one who is at the origin of our smile when we sit in silence. That is, the Father who constantly welcomes us, the Mother who warms us, who constantly nourishes us.

This is what I recognize as a personal God.

  1. On a purely personal and idiosyncratic level, I distinguish « god » from « the gods ».

The former I see as the overarching consciousness, awareness, in the dreams of which this reality takes shape.

The latter are more advanced than most of us, but, ultimately, we all share the same divine nature. The gods are rather like elder brethren and sisters, I suppose.

The former may have personality, but is known through the latter.

Just my take on it. Does not apply to anyone else.

    1. This latter definition really corresponds to the Mahayana Buddhism teaching.
For Buddhism, this existence as a god is less enviable than a human one, for it is a lesser incentive to practice…or something like that..
