A Sharp Push on the Divers’ Backs

This morning, I considered that when Dogen pronounced the injunction to « leave the body-mind, » « shinjin datsuraku, » he meant precisely that.

There are certainly multiple possible interpretations, on different levels, all relevant at their level.

However, Dogen’s primary meaning, the deepest, the one richest in teachings, is the most direct, the most abrupt: leave the body-mind: immediately stop tinkering in this small space: leave it.

To allow the big dive (or great takeoff) to occur, it is sometimes necessary to give a sharp push on the divers’ backs.

  1. From what I have read of Dogen, if he always meant precisely what he said, confusion will turn to chaos.

But you may be right, on this one.

Leave the mind that is tied to the body. Leave the limits of finite thought.

The infinite ocean of consciousness awaits, if you only let your awareness step off the boat.
