The feeling of stifling, suffocation, felt when reading certain texts – biblical in this case – does not necessarily reveal we are in a situation of a spirituality-deprived content which would be inherent to the text.
More certainly, it marks a reading where the anchoring in the depth of consciousness has been lost. The buoy on which we sit when judging such a text « narrow, oppressive », has been drifting into superficial waters.
The oily algae from the stagnant waters of which we speak do not exist in the eye of the solidly- anchored reader.
(this note is not dealing with anchoring in a specific tradition, but anchoring / Dwelling in a center of our being deep enough to enable spiritual understanding.)
